We flew into Mcarthy AK (which was awesome!) and took a tour of the historic Kennecott mine. The scale of this operation and how well (and how much!) if it is preserved is amazing.

The Kennecott Mines, located in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, Alaska, has a crazy history (look it up!). This site that played a significant role in the early 20th-century copper mining boom. Discovered in 1900 by prospectors Jack Smith and Clarence Warner, the mines were found to contain one of the richest copper deposits in the world, with ore grades as high as 85% copper1.

The mining operations were an engineering marvel, involving the construction of a 200-mile railroad, 30 miles of trestles, and three miles of aerial tramways to transport the ore from the remote mountain site to the nearest port.

By 1911, the Kennecott Mines Company, backed by the Guggenheim and Morgan families, had established a fully operational mining complex, including a concentration mill, power plant, machine shop, and more. The mines operated until 1938, producing over $200 million worth of copper. However, the sliver portion is where the largest chunk of the income was made.

When the mine shut down suddenly (Most workers had 1.5 hour notice to get on the last train out of town), lots of artifacts were left behind. Making this a very well-preserved site to visit.
