This National Shooting Sports Month. Video features my first official firearms Collaboration with a manufacturer: The AIR-15 !
About 12 years ago, I got to know the MAG Tactical Team and spent some time with their incredibly light magnesium alloy uppers & lowers. At the time, I had gotten into promoting people building their own ARs from stripped powers and had plenty of opportunity to evaluate various offers. Not only were the lowers awesome and LIGHT, I liked the company as well… so, we collaborated on a limited run of rifles. Their upper & lower, my pics on the rest of the parts used in the package to build out a usable AR type rifle that would weigh less than FIVE POUNDS, including a red dot optic!
The T-1 Micro from Aimpoint was all the rage at the time, and it played perfectly into the plan. Other parts included:
Mission First Tactical Minimalist Stock
AP Customs carbon fiber fore-end
All Star Tactical Viper muzzle brake
Hogue rubber grip
The gun got a fair amount of attention at launch and was featured in videos and magazines (https://www.swatmag.com/article/almos....
The limited run sold out pretty fast and, unfortunately, MAG Tactical ran into unrelated internal issues before we could even discuss another run. If you’ve got a MAG Tactical AIR-15 or home build, consider yourself lucky! I hardly ever see them anymore.
From time-to-time, I see interest in very lightweight carbines perk up. Nowadays, any AR build under SIX pounds is almost always a braced pistol or SBR configuration. I honestly think the AIR-15 was the first… and maybe only… ready-to-go out of the box production AR type rifle that was delivered With An Optic at under the Five Pound mark. If you know of another one, drop it in the comments!
