Special HYBRID Colloquium, jointly organized by ASET forum together with the TIFR Gender Harmony Committee, on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science:
Purnima Sinha was the first woman to receive a Ph.D. degree in Physics from the University of Calcutta. Her supervisor was Professor Satyendra Nath Bose. In this talk I will review her scientific work and other aspects of her life in the context of the history of women in science, and in particular in pre and post -independent India. I hope to also add a personal perspective from the point of view of a daughter who is also a scientist.
Speaker's Profile:
Sukanya Sinha received her Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from the University of Maryland at College Park. Her research in the area of General Relativity and Quantum Field Theory. She has been teaching physics at the Indian Statistical Institute for the past two decades. She is also deeply passionate about science communication and has been actively involved in outreach activities. She was awarded the Rabindra Smriti Puraskar for science writing in Bengali.
