ABOUT THE WORK
“SOUTH WIND PEOPLE” (A Wind Fanfare) is a brief work written for Dr. David N. Vance and the University of Saint Mary’s community wind ensemble.
The work is one minute and thirty seconds (1m, 30s) in duration if played at the written tempo marking of a quarter note = 144 beats per minute.
It is “a wind fanfare” that’s suited to open a concert program, open the second set after intermission, and even as a concert closer or encore.
The challenges that are contained in preparing and presenting the work are based in musical the typical competencies that all instrumentalists and ensembles strive to achieve and maintain.
Intonation. Smooth and fluid technique. Section integrity. Balance.

ABOUT THE TITLE
“South Wind People": The state name "Kansas" is derived from the Kanza tribe, whose name translates as "south wind people" or "wind people," highlighting the prominence of southerly winds in the region's history and climate.
I selected this title as a tribute to the state of Kansas and the compelling diversity of its broad history.
The Kansas people are the Indigenous people of the Arapaho, Cheyenne, Comanche, Jiwere, Kaw/Kansa, Kickapoo, Kiowa, Ochethi Sakowin, Ogaxpa, Osage, Pawnee, Peoria, Sauk and Meskwwaki, and Wichita tribes, which once occupied the lands of Kansas prior to colonization.
Another term for the people of Kansas is "Jayhawker", which became synonymous with the people of Kansas after the Civil War.
