In a massive boost to Indian Navy’s logistic support capability, the GoI has cleared the project to build 5 Fleet Support Ships. These vessels are going to be built by Vishakhapatnam based Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL). This is the first order for HSL, which is brought under control of Ministry of Defence from the Ministry of Shipping from February 2010 in recognition of its strategic importance, for construction of fleet support ships. HSL has also signed an agreement with a Turkish shipyard for collaboration to take up design and construction of fleet support vessels. It will involve transfer of technology from Anadolu Shipyard, part of the TAIS consortium of Turkey, with which HSL signed an agreement for technical collaboration in 2020. Besides designs, the Turkish consortium will provide engineering services, planning and preparation of specifications.
The Fleet Support Ships are going to be used for replenishing the fuel, food, spares & ammunition for Indian Navy warship to ensure the warships are operational for longer period without need to come back to shore. This will massively boost the Indian Navy operational preparedness and readiness. It will allow Navy to continue its warship deployment for longer period.
The vessels will be 230 metres long and have a displacement of 45,000 tonnes which is almost same as INS Vikrant – India’s first indigenously designed and build aircraft carrier.
HSL is expected to deliver the first fleet support vessel (FSV) to the navy within four years & remaining ships to be delivered at the rate of one every 10 months to 12 months. The 5 vessels will be delivered in span of 8 years. This project will also boost the ship building ecosystem in India and various small and MSME enterprises will be benefited. This will also create thousands of new jobs.
