Bone Pain, a Phone Call That Mattered, and Why Family Isn’t Simple

Then something unexpected happened.

The head oncologist from Fred Hutch personally called me this morning to talk about my frequent urination. We laughed, we talked it through, and he told me — very plainly — to stop drinking so much liquid. What mattered most wasn’t the advice… it was that this incredibly important man took time out of his day to call me about something as simple as peeing.

He made me feel like I mattered. Like I was worth the call.

He was excited about my attitude and asked what we were doing today. I told him my wife and I were going car shopping — our first time doing that as a married couple — and he was genuinely happy for us.

We went to the lot, found a vehicle we liked… then found one we liked even more. When the price didn’t work and the salesman wouldn’t even talk about adjusting it, we walked away. And honestly, that felt like a small win too.
