🌍 Welcome to «aliis vocibus» (aliīs vōcibus) — “with other voices” — where we explore lesser-known languages!
This time, we’re heading to eastern Germany, near the borders with Poland and the Czech Republic — to discover Sorbian, or rather two Sorbian languages: Upper Sorbian and Lower Sorbian. They’re Germany’s last surviving Slavic languages — hidden in plain sight in the heart of Central Europe.
🔹 What exactly is Sorbian — a dialect, or two distinct languages?
🔹 How did a Slavic tongue survive for over a thousand years inside Germany?
🔹 What makes it sound so different from German — and so close to Polish or Czech?
🔹 And how many people still speak it today?
You’ll hear examples of both Upper and Lower Sorbian, see how they relate to neighboring languages, and learn how a small but proud community keeps its voice alive — from Lusatia all the way to Texas.
✨ Share your thoughts, experiences, or requests in the comments.
If you enjoy discovering languages and voices that rarely get heard, give a thumbs-up and subscribe to aliīs vōcibus for more.
