We first head to Baie-des-Rochers for a hike, a hamlet located about 15 km from St-Siméon. To get there, we have to take road 138 east towards Tadoussac.
With several kilometers of hiking trails, the municipal park of the place will make you discover the enchanting setting of Baie-des-Rochers and its breathtaking landscapes. You can also go canoeing and kayaking, and the more adventurous can even go wilderness camping on site.
Like Baie-des-Rochers, Port-au-Persil seems to have been mentioned for the first time by Samuel de Champlain in his 1632 voyages. The little river is still there, the cove too, as if nothing had changed in 400 years. This means that since the beginning of New France, this place has had the same name. Port-au-Persil has also served as a film location for many Quebec films. Popular with artists, the hamlet is also a must for painters who have been coming here for more than a century to paint this magical landscape.
Like us, most tourists visit the old Port-au-Persil wharf, which for decades was home to the schooners owned by the local citizens. What most people don't know is that Port-au-Persil was first settled by Scots in the 19th century. Not being Catholic, these Protestant Scots found a place to practice their faith in isolation and prosper as they were involved in the lumber trade. As you walk around, you will notice the beautiful little chapel that has become, over the years, the emblem of the hamlet. The McLarens still own the buildings built by their ancestors and continue to come to the land of their patriarch, Neil McLaren.
Encompassing the areas of Baie-des-Rochers and Port-au-Persil, the village of Saint-Siméon is located at a strategic crossroads. Indeed, here, you can decide to continue your journey towards three regions of Quebec. To the east, route 138 continues to the North Shore, to the north, route 170 takes you to the Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean region, while the Trans-Saint-Laurent will take you across the river to Rivière-du-Loup.
The slogan "Charlevoix's nature village" suits the municipality well as it offers many outdoor activities. We took the walking trail that leads to the cross of the municipality and offers an exceptional panorama on the village.
At any time, right next to the ferry, tourists like to spend a few hours on the beautiful beach of the place.
After spending a few hours in Saint-Siméon, we take advantage of our stay in the area to visit the backcountry. Indeed, Charlevoix has several lakes in the middle of the forest and there is no lack of outfitters. On the road, we make another brief stop at the Parc d'aventure en Montagne les Palissades. The place has been in existence since the 70's and the trails to the summit offer a unique panorama. When the weather is nice, you can even see the St-Lawrence River in the distance.
A small hidden treasure, when you take the forest road leading to the Bataram club, the Black River's notches offer pools suitable for swimming and shallow. In the heat of the day, this is a great place to cool off.
We were able to admire an exceptional landscape and spectacular lakes like the Lac Plongeon with its three kilometers long. The wildlife here is unique in the middle of the Canadian Shield. Moreover, the mountains have this rounded shape since they are among the oldest in the world.
