Awake Asleep
The times I wake you inadvertently
You smile and say hello, go back to sleep,
And then remember nothing in the morning.
I’ve thought, if those times could be strung together,
What a piece of jewellery they’d make!
Necklace of evanescent wakefulness
That you could wear, and touch, and so remember.
No, life’s richness lies elsewhere. Best leave
Such gems of love within the shell of night.
