NEW ZEALAND NET TECH
This 3D model of a modern trawl net shows you all its components, which are designed to be efficient, effective and have limited impact on their surroundings.
Like any type of food production, bottom trawling has an impact. Our responsibility is to keep that impact to a minimum.
In New Zealand, trawling is necessary because many of our fish (like flatfish, snapper, tarakihi, gurnard and rig) breed, grow and sustain a healthy population near the seafloor. In fact, 70% of our commercial fish catches by volume are caught by trawling along pre-established tow lines -- ie, the same places over and over again -- that total less than 3% of New Zealand's waters.

Founded in 1953, the New Zealand Federation of Commercial Fishermen is a national organisation that represents independent, private owner-operator fishers and their crew – typically operating small vessels of 10–30 metres. The Federation has around 200 members, who make up approximately 30% of all inshore owner-operators and crew operating in coastal New Zealand waters. 🐟 More about the Federation at www.nzfishfed.co.nz
