in this video number {1284} Understanding SMD capacitor Voltage and Capacitance
How to decode smd capacitor marking into voltage rating and capacitor value.
Decoding SMD (Surface Mount Device) capacitors can be tricky since they don’t always follow a standard marking system like resistors. Here’s how you can decode them:
1. Numeric Code (Capacitance Value)
Many SMD capacitors use a three-digit or four-digit code:
Three-digit code (e.g., 104, 223)
The first two digits represent significant figures.
The third digit is the multiplier (number of zeros).
Example:
104 = 10 × 10⁴ pF = 100nF (0.1µF)
223 = 22 × 10³ pF = 22nF
Four-digit code (e.g., 1003)
Works similarly but with more precision.
Example: 1003 = 100 × 10³ pF = 100nF
2. No Marking (Mostly MLCC - Ceramic Capacitors)
Many small ceramic capacitors don’t have markings.
The only way to determine the value is by checking the datasheet or using an LCR meter.
3. Voltage Rating
SMD capacitors usually don’t have voltage ratings printed.
The voltage rating must be determined from datasheets based on the package size and material.
Common SMD capacitor voltage ratings: 6.3V, 10V, 16V, 25V, 50V, etc.
4. Case Code / Package Size
SMD capacitors come in standardized sizes like 0402, 0603, 0805, 1206, etc.
Knowing the package size helps in identifying the voltage and capacitance through the manufacturer’s chart.
5. Polarity (For Tantalum Capacitors)
Tantalum capacitors have a polarity marking (stripe or “+” sign indicating the positive terminal).
Ceramic capacitors are usually non-polarized.
6. Using an LCR Meter
If there’s no marking, use an LCR meter to measure the capacitance directly.
