A spaceship is moving away from the earth at a speed of 0.80c when it fires a missile parallel to the direction of motion of ship. The missile moves at a speed of o.60c relative to the ship. what would be the speed of the missile as measured by an observer on the earth? Compare with the prediction of Galilean kinematics.
According to Galilean transformation the speed of the missile observed by a man standing on earth will be
V observed from earth =u 𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑠ℎ𝑖𝑝+𝑣 𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑖𝑠𝑠𝑖𝑙𝑒 𝑟𝑒𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝑠𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑠ℎ𝑖𝑝
𝑉=𝑢+𝑣
𝑉=0.80+0.60=1.4 𝑐
It surpasses the speed of light and is invalid
Relativistic Velocity Lorentz transformation
Cannot use classical mechanics.
v is the velocity we are looking for.
u = 0.80c = the velocity of the spaceship
v' = 0.60c = the velocity of the missile in the reference frame of the spaceship
𝑣 =1.40𝑐/1.48 = 0.95𝑐 𝑉=0.95𝑐 according to Lorentz transformation
𝑉=1.40 𝑐 𝑎𝑐𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡𝑜 𝑔𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑛 𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑠𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛
