Southern Pacific and Union Pacific freights, and Burlington Northern Santa Fe trackage-rights trains, traversed the scenic Glenwood Springs and Moffat Tunnel subdivisions west of the Continental Divide. Classic motive power included Southern Pacific SD40T-2 "tunnel motor" and AC-traction motor AC4400CW freight-hauler power machines. Union Pacific power included C40-8 and the monstrous SD90/43MAC diesels. Passenger trains included Amtrak's Superliner equipped California Zephyr. Amtrak Genesis P42DC streamlined diesels were brand new during this classic era of railroading, which also powered the privately contracted American Orient Express, representative of the glory days of railroading.
