No matter what your circumstances, God has a plan for you. Also, He has a plan for our church.
It seems that humans by nature want to focus on immediate circumstances. For many people, it is easy to get discouraged or depressed about where they are in life. Perhaps a job that isn’t what they want, or domestic problems or financial problems and the list goes on. The core problems are focus and perception.
When things aren’t going well, our perception is that whatever is happening will never end and our focus is typically on ourselves. Moments become hours or days as anxiety and frustration build.
The truth is that in difficult times Christians should focus on making sure we are in God’s will and recognize that our time under duress is miniscule compared to the eternal joy we will have in the presence of God. Life is not always easy and God has not promised us a bed of roses on this earth. It was said of Jesus: Isaiah 53:3 “He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.”
Jesus, the Son of God, the creator and sustainer of the universe was born into this world for the sole purpose of dying in agony and being resurrected to provide a way of eternal salvation for our sin. God the Father had a plan for him. Isaiah 53:8 tells us “For the transgressions of My people, he was stricken”.
God also has a plan for each person on earth and each church. Jesus’ plan was unique to Him. As the Son of God He was uniquely qualified to carry out the Father’s plan. God has a unique plan for every one of us and has or will equip us for that plan.
Today we will be looking at the first thirteen verses of Jeremiah 29. In this scripture God declares He has a plan for His people. Christians are His people and he has a plan for us. Judah was experiencing a disaster, but God is in control. They were facing very distressing times, but God was working His plan through the years. God’s plan was not their plan and often it isn’t our plan. We need to live in obedience and surrender ourselves to God. When looking toward the crucifixion Jesus said in Matthew 26:39 “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.” Sometimes the Lord will deliver us from difficulties, but often He calls us to be faithful to them. Our desire is to ask to get out of our problems, but God’s answer may be that He put you there and to get used to it. It is more important to be faithful than comfortable. The Israelites had to relearn obedience, but they also needed a restored relationship with God.
