I was asked, should I get my gallbladder removed because of one gallstone?

First, check with your doctor before doing any of the things I recommend. I’m not suggesting you do or do not have your gallbladder removed. I just want to give you information to think about.

One of the symptoms of a gallbladder problem is right shoulder pain. If there’s swelling in your gallbladder, which is on your right side, it will put pressure on the phrenic nerve that runs right to your shoulder and up to your neck or even to your head.

Many people have this symptom and believe it’s a shoulder injury. Massage the gallbladder area under your right rib cage. If the pain goes away, you can be pretty sure it’s gallbladder-related.

Bloating and indigestion are other symptoms, as are pain, tension, or fullness under your right rib cage.

If your entire gallbladder is full of stones, you’ve gone past the point of reversal and may just need to have the entire organ removed. But if there’s only one, you can then take a look at what changes in your diet you need to make to dissolve the stone.

If someone tells you that you don’t really need your gallbladder, they’re lying to you. There’s a condition called post cholecystectomy syndrome that occurs 40 percent of the time after gallbladder removal and can be lifelong. The symptoms include gas, bloating, and anal leakage.

Your gallbladder concentrates bile, used to break down dietary fats. Without the organ, and without enough bile, your body can’t extract the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and E, for example. You could experience vision problems and bone pain, among other issues. My point is if you’re going to have your gallbladder removed, do it for a good reason, not just one stone.

What causes gallstones? Too high a concentration of cholesterol plus not enough bile salts. There are several reasons your bile salts get depleted, among them:

● Birth control pills; too much estrogen
● High levels of cortisol, the stress hormone
● High levels of insulin from a high carbohydrate diet
● Liver damage

You can prevent gallstones by going on a low-carb diet like healthy keto, which includes lots of vegetables. This should help you to not have to have your gallbladder removed.
