Suggi is the beautiful Indian folk art performed as on 10-03-2025, by the Haalakki Vokkaligas of Kandavalli Village of Kumta Taluk, Uttara Kannada District, Karnataka State.
In the Uttara Kannada region of Karnataka State, the Halakki Vokkaligas perform the folk art of Suggi Kunitha. Usually, Suggi Kunitha is performed during the harvest season. Suggi signifies happiness and peace. Suggi Kunitha begins four days before the Kamana Punnim or Holi festival normally in the month of March.
The folk artists travel in groups from village to village, playing an instrument called Gummate, and singing songs about the blessings of a prosperous harvest.
It is believed that this will bring good rains in the village and keep the villagers away from diseases.
The artists are dressed in beautiful clothes, wearing wooden hats decorated with beautiful bird feathers and flowers. Their crowns are seen as a symbol of prosperity. While dancing, the folk artists hold a stick in one hand and a special object made of peacock feathers in the other. To add a little humor to this dance troupe, they have created characters called soginavas and kamagagaras.
