Record Producer, Engineer. During his lengthy and storied career, he encompassed a wide range of genres as he earned roughly twenty Grammy Awards. Born Albert Harry Schmitt in Brooklyn, New York, he was raised in New York City and following a stint with the United States Navy, he landed a position as an engineer with Apex Records. He was initially tasked to record the Duke Ellington Orchestra which led to his relocation to Los Angeles. After becoming a staff engineer with RCA Victor, he formed a successful collaboration with Henry Mancini and contributed to scores for the TV program "Peter Gunn" (1959 to 1960) and the motion picture "Hatari!" (1962). He would go on to work with Cal Tjader, Rosemary Clooney, Al Hirt and Sam Cooke. With Cooke, he contributed to the songs "Cupid" (1961) and "Another Saturday Night" (1963), both became Top 20 hits. During the mid 1960s, he established himself as a producer and contributed to albums for Jefferson Airplane, Neil Young and Jackson Browne. He returned to his roots as an engineer during the 1970s and worked with Steely Dan, George Benson and Toto. He contributed to Frank Sinatra's album "Duets" (1993) and Ray Charles' final album "Genius Loves Company" (2004). Schmitt received a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame for his contributions to the music industry, located at 1750 N. Vine St.
