Caabu hosted an online discussion on the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh, the Al Jazeera Arabic journalist killed on 11 May 2022 whilst covering an Israeli raid on the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank. At the meeting, we heard from a work colleague of 17 years Wessam Hammad as to what she was like, what she represented to the Palestinian people. We shall heard from Francesca Albanese, the new UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967 who will address legal issues surrounding the killing and the need for a proper independent investigation. Anna McMorrin MP gave her reflections having just returned from her first delegation to Palestine with Caabu and MAP.
Wessam Hammad is a Palestinian news producer at Al Jazeera media network in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Israel. He has been covering the conflict and political issues for the past seventeen years, either in Palestinian territories, Israel, and other regional countries. He worked with Shireen for all that time. He is an alumnus of the United Nations training programme for Palestinian journalists, which is part of the UN Department of Public Information’s Special Information Programme on the Question of Palestine.
Francesca Albanese was appointed the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, by the Human Rights Council at its 49th session in March 2022 and has taken up her function as of 1 May 2022. Ms. Albanese is an Affiliate Scholar at the Institute for the Study of International Migration at Georgetown University, as well as a Senior Advisor on Migration and Forced Displacement for a think-tank, Arab Renaissance for Democracy and Development (ARDD).
Anna McMorrin MP is the Labour Member of Parliament for Cardiff North elected in 2017, and later re-elected in 2019. In May 2021 she was appointed as Labour’s Shadow Minister for Justice, previously having served for a year as Shadow Minister for International Development. Anna has just returned from a Caabu-MAP Parliamentary delegation to Palestine, where the delegation met with members of Shireen's family.
