In this video you will learn how a hydraulic jack works. I have shown all external and internal parts of hydraulic jack and for what purpose they serve.
A hydraulic bottle jack operates on the principle of Pascal's law, which states that pressure applied to a fluid in a closed system will be transmitted equally and undiminished throughout the fluid in all directions. Here's how it works:
Piston and Cylinder: Inside the hydraulic bottle jack, there is a cylinder where a piston can move up and down. The piston is connected to a platform or saddle that lifts the load.
Hydraulic Fluid: The cylinder contains hydraulic fluid, usually oil, which fills the space around the piston.
Pumping Action: When you operate the jack by pumping the handle, it forces hydraulic fluid from the reservoir into the pump piston cylinder through a check valve system. The handle is typically connected to a pump piston that draws in hydraulic fluid on the upstroke and pushes it into the cylinder on the downstroke.
Pressure Build-Up: As more fluid is pumped into the cylinder, it creates pressure against the piston.
Lifting the Load: The pressure exerted on the main piston creates a force that pushes against the load
Hydraulic Jack Works on Two Principal's:-
1. Pascal law:-
Pascal's Law is fundamental to the operation of hydraulic bottle jacks. Here’s how it applies:
Pressure Transmission: According to Pascal's Law, pressure exerted at any point in an enclosed fluid will be transmitted equally in all directions within the fluid. In the context of a hydraulic bottle jack, this means that when force (pressure) is applied to the pump piston through pumping, this pressure is transmitted through the hydraulic fluid to the Main piston, resulting in a magnified force that lifts the load (car, equipment, etc.).
Mechanical Advantage: The hydraulic bottle jack utilizes Pascal's Law to create a mechanical advantage. By applying a small force over a larger area ( pump piston), it generates a larger force over a smaller area (main piston). This allows the jack to lift heavy objects with relatively less effort from the user.
Functioning: When you operate a hydraulic bottle jack, pumping the handle moves the pump piston(small piston), forcing hydraulic fluid into the cylinder chamber where the main piston (larger piston) resides. Due to Pascal's Law, the pressure from this fluid is evenly distributed, causing the larger piston to move upward and lift the load placed on the jack.
Locking Mechanism: Once the desired height is reached, a release valve or lever is used to lock the hydraulic fluid in place, preventing the jack from lowering unintentionally.
Lowering the Load: To lower the load, the release valve is opened gradually, allowing hydraulic fluid to flow back into the reservoir, thus lowering the piston and the load.
Stability and Safety: Hydraulic bottle jacks are designed with a wide base and sturdy construction to ensure stability and safety during lifting operations.
2. Law of Lever:-
The Law of the Lever is also fundamental in the design and operation of hydraulic bottle jacks. Here’s how it relates to their functionality:
Mechanical Advantage: The Law of the Lever states that the effort (E) applied multiplied by the distance from the fulcrum to the point of effort (D1) is equal to the load (L) multiplied by the distance from the fulcrum to the point of load (D2). In the context of a hydraulic bottle jack, this translates to the principle of mechanical advantage. The lever arm in the jack's design allows a small force applied over a larger distance (by pumping the handle) to lift a heavy load over a smaller distance (by moving the piston).
Pumping Action: When you operate a hydraulic bottle jack, you pump the handle to move hydraulic fluid from a small piston (effort side) to a larger piston (load side). The handle acts as a lever, and according to the Law of the Lever, the effort applied over a longer distance is converted into a greater force over a shorter distance, thereby lifting the load effectively.
Fulcrum and Balance: In the hydraulic bottle jack, the fulcrum metaphorically lies within the mechanism where the hydraulic fluid transmits force. As you apply force to the handle (effort arm), the hydraulic system ensures that the load (located at the larger piston) is lifted with a multiplied force, adhering to the principles of leverage articulated by the Law of the Lever.
