Alexandra Road Estate, A Modernist Icon in Camden
The Alexandra Road Estate, designed by Neave Brown and completed in the late 1970s, is one of London’s most striking examples of social housing and modernist design. Stretching over half a kilometre along Abbey Road in Camden, its bold stepped terraces and concrete geometry have made it both celebrated and controversial.
Built as an ambitious response to the housing crisis of its time, the estate was intended to foster community, with pedestrian streets, shared gardens, and a layout designed to prioritise people over cars. Today, it remains a symbol of both the potential and the challenges of post-war housing in the UK.
