In the 16th century, Willem Barentsz, the Dutch navigator, was determined to discover the elusive Northeast Passage. In 1594, he set sail from Amsterdam aboard the ship Mercury, aiming to find a direct route from Europe to the Far East. Navigating icy conditions along Russia's northern coastline, Barentsz and his crew encountered colossal ice formations that obstructed their progress. They also had their first encounter with the polar bear.
Undeterred by the challenges of their first voyage, Barentsz embarked on a second expedition in 1595. Accompanied by additional ships gifted by Prince Maurice of Orange, they sought to conquer the Northeast Passage again. However, they faced treacherous blizzards and another encounter with polar bears, resulting in casualties.
In 1596, Barentsz embarked on his third and final voyage, this time without sponsors. Their aim was to find the Northeast Passage and reach China. During this expedition, they discovered Bear Islands and endured harsh Arctic conditions. Unfortunately, Barentsz lost his life at sea in June 1597.
