In the middle of this chaos was Terrence “Silk T” Wallace, a soul singer with a voice smoother than Hennessy and a wardrobe fit for kings. Silk T had always blended style with sound flashy suits on stage, velvet vocals in the booth. But in ’85, he took it further: he recorded a song that turned the ugliest word in the streets into a runway spectacle.

The idea was born in a courthouse. Silk T had shown up to support a cousin on trial. He noticed one of the witnesses strutting into the room not in fear, but in Gucci loafers, Versace tie, and Cartier cuffs. The whole gallery whispered: “That man telling, but damn, he fly.”

Silk T couldn’t shake the irony a rat wrapped in luxury. That night, he jotted the first lines on a hotel notepad:

“Walked in the court with my Gucci on,
Judge look twice cause the way I put it on.”
