In any planning effort, you always cross a road where you need to decide how you’ll execute against your goals or objectives. The answer? Action planning! While there are different ways to build an action plan, we’ll focus on key results and compare them to a milestone-based approach. So, what are key results and should we really use them?

When to use Key Results for Action Planning:
Key results tell us how we are going to accomplish our objective. It’s best to use key results for action planning when:

● You have good data for measurables
● Are committed to reviewing on a quarterly or monthly basis
● Your team is ready to turn action items into progress

When to avoid Key Results for Action Planning
A great alternative to key results is the milestone approach which focuses on what will be delivered and by when. It’s best to use this approach:

● When it’s easier for your team to think sequentially on action items
● When you don’t have much data
● If you’re comfortable with subjective measures

Be sure to decide on one approach as opposed to using both key results and milestones. The strategy and structure behind building an action plan using these approaches are quite different. Using pieces of both tends to lead to confusion and weaker plans.
