Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when slaves were finally freed in the last rebel state of Texas. This is the subject of Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Annette Gordon-Reed’s new book. She speaks with Walter Isaacson about the significance of the day—and her own extraordinary story as the first Black student to integrate into a white school.
