Описание: Last year, the Biden administration announced support for a proposal submitted to the World Trade Organization (WTO) that would relax Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) protection for COVID-19 vaccines and treatments.

The proposal aroused controversy throughout the biotech and intellectual property worlds, with critics calling instead for vaccine manufacturers to accelerate production and for Western governments to subsidize vaccine delivery overseas. Supporters of the proposal argued that a TRIPS waiver would allow generic manufacturers to quickly produce cheap vaccine doses for the developing world. This month, the WTO is finally considering a compromise proposal on this issue with major ramifications for innovation and public health.
