"Erlkönig", composed by Franz Schubert in 1815 and arranged by Franz Liszt for the Piano, is based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's poem of the same name. Liszt, being a virtuoso pianist, adds even more technical challenges for the pianist, for instance, turning the bass motif in the left hand into octaves.
It tells the story of a father riding through the night with his young son, who is feverish and terrified. As they hurry on horseback, the boy insists he can see and hear the Erlkönig, a supernatural being who whispers temptations and threats, trying to lure him away. The father, unable to see or hear the spirit, dismisses the boy’s fears as imagination, mere mist, wind, or rustling leaves. The tension builds as the Erlkönig becomes more menacing, promising the child pleasures and, finally, claiming him by force. Upon reaching home, it is too late. The child is dead in the father's arms.
This piece is insanely virtuosic, with the general consensus that it is one of the hardest pieces both technique and musicality-wise.
And, sorry for misleading you, it is not very chill to study to.
The piano cover is by Yuja Wang: • Yuja Wang plays Schubert/Liszt : Erlkönig
