Learn how to build a ladybug sized FM spy bug. This one here measures only 0.05 sq inch and has a range of up to 150ft.
You won't probably be able to make it much smaller than the one described here. It uses a MEMS microphone (even though this is not the smallest yet) and a simple transistor oscillator circuit. The whole circuit is powered by a single 4.8mm diameter 1.55V silver oxide button cell.

This Covert listening device is probably the smallest anybody will be able to build at home. Its dimensions are only 4.75 x 6.8mm.
All the components are available on Digikey.com for about 6 USD + shipping.
The transmitter circuit works down to a supply voltage of about 1.05V while maintaining exceptional audio quality.
