How To Design A Narrow, Shady Area🌺🌿

Описание: Blank slate! These principles apply to any type of light you may have.

Try to mix heights, foliage types and colors, as well as flower colors. This creates a nice balance.

You may need to move some things around to get this right (I have moved so many things over the years!). Think about it first and plan a little bit in advance. Then lay things out and see what looks nice with other things. For example, distribute yellowish hostas among medium and darker-leafed varieties.

Reminder that larger plants go in the back and smaller ones in the front. Put the ground cover like lamium or vinca/myrtle along the stones and the larger stuff a little farther back. Tallest things back by the fence.

If you have a lot of shade in your garden lean in. There are so many plants to choose from. They are more subtle in color but rich in foliage and beautiful in different combinations.

Some of my favorite shade perennials (they come back every year): astilbe, hosta, huchera (coral bells), European/wild ginger, lamium (“dead nettle”), ligularia, Solomon seal, bleeding hearts, trillium, lung wort, and various ferns. And of course, moss🤸🏼‍♀️💕

For annuals (they only last for one season), I love impatiens to fill in empty areas where you want some color.

Favorite shade shrubs: mountain laurel, inkberry, American holly.

If you’re planting a bunch of things and have’t added compost in a while do this as you’re planting to enrich the soil. Try to do it every year if you can but if not, at least every other year.
