PUBLIC COMMENT PROCEDURE:
Why Public Comment Matters: The Beverly Hills Unified School District values your input! Public comments help shape our decisions and ensure community needs are addressed. Public comment is permitted during Board meetings to allow community members to provide input on district-related topics. Comments must be respectful and relevant to district business. Personal attacks, inappropriate language, and discussing specific employees or students are not permitted.


PREPARATION: Regular Board Meetings: Agendas posted 72 hours in advance at bhusd.org/boardagendas. Special Board Meetings: Only items on the agenda may be addressed. The Board does not engage in discussion or respond during public comment (per the Brown Act). All Requests for Public Comment must be received by the start of the Agenda Hearing Period-Public Comment item. Any requests to speak or cede time received after will not be accepted.

TYPES OF PUBLIC COMMENT: Agenda Hearing Period-Public Comment (Non-Agendized Items): This is the designated portion of the meeting where speakers may address the Board on district-related matters that are not listed on the agenda. Public Comment on Agendized Items: This is the designated portion of the meeting where speakers may comment on any item listed on the meeting agenda before the Board discusses or takes action on that item.

MAKING A COMMENT: Online: Complete a “Request to Address the Board” form online. Visit bhusd.org/publiccomment. This form will close at noon on the day of the meeting. In Person: Complete a “Request to Address the Board” form prior to the start of the Agenda Hearing Period-Public Comment item (available at the meeting). Written comments may be submitted at bhusd.org/publiccomment. Written comments will be included in the record but not read aloud.

DURING THE MEETING: Public comment portions of the Board meeting are limited to a total of 20 minutes per agendized item. Public comment on non-agendized items will be heard during the Agenda Hearing Period-Public Comment portion of the meeting, which is limited to 20-minutes, regardless of the number of topics. Speakers will be called up in the order they signed up and may have up to three minutes to address the Board. Speaking time may be reduced to accommodate as many participants as time allows. Should a speaker wish to cede their time, the original speaker must be present and must introduce the speaker they are ceding to at the podium. Only one individual can cede time to a speaker.
