The “Pick and Axe, a Northwoods Journal” in Bessemer, MI, that describes itself as “thoroughly opposed to pernicious & unnecessary progress,” published the following on July 31, 1975:
“Henry (Hank) Thunander was back home in Bessemer recently to visit with his folks who live out north on the Black River Road. Henry was born in Grayling thirty-two years ago and his folks brought him to Bessemer at the age of three months. He attended St. Sebastian School, St. Ambrose (Ironwood Catholic) High School, and after graduation in 1961, Henry went on to St. Thomas College in St. Paul, Minnesota. He began studying the accordion when he was nine years old, taking lessons from Zenda DeRubeis of Hurley. After completing his course of study at St. Thomas, Henry went into the Army where he spent his tour of duty entertaining the troops as a Special Services entertainer. After leaving the service, Henry went into the nightclub entertaining business and has remained in that field ever since. Henry has his own weekly radio show on WMIN in the Twin Cities. He has a three-piece orchestra which he books into night clubs and a five-piece group for ballrooms. He has three albums of his recorded music already released, each of which has sold with moderate success, and Henry says he will soon be releasing two additional albums. His records sell regularly in 28 states and Canada. He has worked extensively with and recorded with Frank Yankovick [sic], the polka king. But Henry prefers to play a broader variety of music and feels that the accordion is not restricted to polka music. The Henry ‘Hank’ Thunander Orchestra is a versatile group which is quite as much at home with ‘Zorba the Greek’ or ‘Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head,’ as with the ‘Beerbarrel Polka.’ Henry is quite a talent, and even though he lived the first three months of his life in Grayling, we’re still proud to call him a son of Bessemer.”
