Lab tests and immunizations required for immigration medical exam

The lab tests include tests for tuberculosis, syphilis and gonorrhea. The requirement for each of the tests is dependent on your age.

The tuberculosis test is required for applicants who are age 2 or older. There are two tuberculosis tests available. They are the QuantiFERON ® TB Gold Test and the T-Spot ® TB Test. Both tests require a blood sample. If your TB test is positive, you will need to have a chest x-rays for evaluation.

Applicants aged 18 to 44 years are required to have a syphilis test. Like TB test, the Syphilis test is also a blood test

Testing for gonorrhea is required for applicants aged 18 to 24 years. This test requires a urine sample.

In addition to lab tests for immigration medical exam, applicants, depending on their age, are required to be vaccinated against some of the 16 vaccine-preventable viral or bacterial infections (COVID-19, mumps, measles, rubella, polio, tetanus and diphtheria toxoids, pertussis, Haemophilus influenzae type B, rotavirus, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, meningococcal disease, varicella, influenza, and pneumococcal pneumonia).

The most commonly required immunizations are listed below:
Applicants who are age 5 or older are required to complete the COVID-19 vaccination. Depending on your age, you are considered fully vaccinated if you have been given two doses of either the Pfizer or the Moderna vaccine or one dose of the Johnson and Johnson covid-19 vaccine. Currently, covid-19 booster is not required for the purpose of immigration medical exam.

Tetanus vaccine such as the Tdap or the Td is needed if you are age 11 or older. It is recommended to have a Tetanus booster every 10 years. If you had a tetanus shot within the past 10 years, you meet the requirement for tetanus vaccination.

MMR vaccine which protects people against Measles, Mumps and Rubella is required for applicants aged 1 to 64 years. Besides getting the MMR vaccination, you can also meet the MMR vaccine requirement if your MMR titers through blood test are positive. MMR vaccine is contraindicated during pregnancy.

Similarly, Varicella vaccine is required for applicants who are age 1 or older. Besides getting the varicella vaccination, you can also meet the varicella vaccine requirement if your varicella titer through blood test is positive or if you had history of chicken pox. Varicella vaccine is contraindicated during pregnancy.

Flu shot is required for applicants who are age six months or older. It is only required during the flu season which is between October 1 and March 31 of the following year.
