Today, I’m diving into the restoration of a first-generation Sony TC-K777—a legendary cassette deck that looks pristine on the outside but hides some serious mechanical challenges inside. After 40+ years of inactivity, the original lubricant has completely dried out, leaving all mechanical parts stuck together, as if glued.
Disassembling this deck was a real struggle, even just to remove the tape transport! Join me in Part 1 as I begin the meticulous disassembly process and start working on the complex transport system, featuring:
BSL (Brushless & Slotless) Direct Drive motor
Secondary Direct Drive motor
Numerous sintered brass bearings
🔧 What You’ll See in Part 1:
Painstaking Disassembly: Freeing stuck mechanical parts, carefully dismantling the transport, and assessing the damage.
Cleaning & Lubrication Plan: Preparing to restore the intricate mechanics for smooth operation.
Understanding the Complexity: See why the TC-K777 transport is one of the most sophisticated designs in cassette deck history.
🎶 What’s Next?
Stay Tuned for Part 2! I’ll be deep-cleaning, relubricating, and restoring the deck’s full functionality.
