गेल्या काही वर्षात एक ट्रेण्ड निर्माण झालेला आहे. जागतिक नेते दिल्लीत न येता थेट मुंबईत दाखल होतात. नरेंद्र मोदी यांच्या पंतप्रधान पदाच्या कार्यकाळात हा ट्रेण्ड सुरू झाला. यूकेचे पंतप्रधान किअर स्टार्मर यांच्यानंतर आता फ्रान्सचे राष्ट्राध्यक्ष इमॅन्यूअल मॅक्रॉन तीन दिवसांच्या भारत भेटीवर आले असताना मुंबईत उतरले. मुंबई हे जागतिक किर्तिचे शहर आहे. देशाची आर्थिक राजधानी आहे. फ्रान्सचा सर्वोच्च नेता भारतात दाखल होतो आणि पंतप्रधान मोदी त्यांची पहीली भेट मुंबईत घेतात ही बाब खचितच महत्वाची आहे. मुंबईचे महत्व वाढवणारी आहे. हा मुंबईला महाराष्ट्रापासून तोडण्याचा आणि दिल्लीला जोडण्याचा डाव आहे, अशी ओरड कऱण्याची संधी देणारी मॅक्रॉन यांची भेट आहे. महानगर पालिका निवडणुकीत पुन्हा एकदा मुंबई महाराष्ट्रापासून तोडण्याची हाकाटी पिटण्यात आली होती. ती निवडणुकी पुरती असते. निवडणुका संपल्या की मुंबई महाराष्ट्रापासून तोडण्याचा डावही संपतो. मुंबई तोडण्याची हाळी देणारे ते लोक आहेत, ज्यांच्या कार्यकाळात मुंबईत फक्त झोपड्या वाढल्या, गर्दी वाढली, मराठी माणूस मुंबई बाहेर फेकला गेला. मुंबई अधिक सुदंर आणि समृद्ध करण्यासाठी त्यांनी काहीही केले नाही. ज्या मोदींवर मुंबई महाराष्ट्रापासून तोडण्याचा आरोप झाला. त्यांनीच मुंबईचे महत्व आंतरराष्ट्रीय पातळीवर वाढवण्याचा सातत्याने प्रयत्न केलेला दिसतो. हे सगळे शांतपणे, नियोजनबद्ध रित्या, कोणतीही भाषणबाजी आणि ओरड केल्याविना केले. ज्या वेगाने हे आकारास आले, त्या वेगाचे कौतूक व्हायलाच हवे.

After the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, now the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, also landed in Mumbai during his three-day visit to India. Mumbai is a globally renowned city and the financial capital of the country. The fact that France’s top leader arrives in India and Prime Minister Modi holds his first meeting with him in Mumbai is certainly significant. It enhances Mumbai’s importance.

Macron’s visit has also provided an opportunity for some to claim that there is a plan to separate Mumbai from Maharashtra and link it directly to Delhi. Similar claims were raised again during the municipal corporation elections, alleging that Mumbai was being separated from Maharashtra. However, such rhetoric remains limited to election periods. Once elections are over, the claims of separating Mumbai from Maharashtra also fade away.

Those who raise such slogans are the same people under whose tenure only slums increased in Mumbai, congestion worsened, and Marathi people were pushed out of the city. They did nothing to make Mumbai more beautiful and prosperous. Ironically, the same Modi who was accused of trying to separate Mumbai from Maharashtra has consistently worked to elevate Mumbai’s importance at the international level. All of this has been done quietly, in a planned manner, without loud speeches or rhetoric. The speed at which this transformation has taken shape deserves appreciation.
