made the subs for ep1 a few months ago so don't expect future uploads to be as quick. will generally take me about a month per episode if I keep up with it. this is also one of the worst episodes as far as audio quality goes—I rely on transcription software as no subs exist for any version of the show—and so future ones might come quicker. let me know if you know what the missing lines towards the beginning are (edit: holding off on future episodes as I'm talking to some folks interested in doing a translation)
the translation might seem off given the strangeness of the episode (and likely is), but, from impressions I've read, I think this episode is already confusing for native speakers. i tried my best
the prominent guest celebrity for this episode is R&B artist "UA", who plays the fictional singer naomi
(8:29) makoto's singing "Applause" (喝采) by Naomi Chiaki ( • 喝采(喝彩) / ちあきなおみ(千秋直美) 1972 )
(9:00) the song playing here and throughout is UA's own song "Temperature" (温度) ( • 温度 )
the single's cover art is original and made for the show
you can find the full lyrics at the end of these notes
(15:20) the character opposite of mike is played by Shigekazu Kuwahara, member of the three-man comedic music group Snakeman Show (ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/スネークマンショー)
he identifies the guy in the photo as "mamoru sakisaka", who suspiciously looks like snakeman's Katsuya Kobayashi
"Mamoru Sakisaka" and "Momonai Hatakeyama" are characters of the "snakeman show" radio show, respectively played by Katsuya and third member Masabu Ito
"one-two-three" is in reference to a song of theirs titled "How are Sakisaka and Momonai doing? One, Two, Three" (咲坂と桃内のごきげんいかが1・2・3) ( • 「スネークマンショー」-「咲坂と桃内のごきげんいかが1・2・3」 )
sometimes incorrectly said to be japan's first rap song, it also features Haruomi Hosono, YMO being frequent collaborators, who produced "Rap Phenomena" the same year (1981) ( • Rap Phenomena - Yellow Magic Orchestra )
one blogger found it confusing that mike is saying "and what's more, mamoru?" over and over. i don't know why either. maybe there's more to the joke here but I think mike's just an idiot
(16:21) no idea what's going on with the audio here, but he also says "get it dry cleaned"
"ma'am" (okaasan) isn't an error, also. i don't know why he calls him that
(18:03) momonai is, of course, played by snakeman's Masabu Ito
he's quoting lyrics from the song mentioned prior
momonai's maybe thinking that mike is messing with him, showing him a photo of a guy who looks like sakisaka and asking if he knows this "sakisaka"
(21:50) the song that's playing is by Robert Johnson, according to a blogger (yt identified it)
(23:05) for those of you as puzzled as mike, the answer he's looking for is "a penguin"
(23:35) you've probably guessed, but "ping pong" is onomatopoeia for a buzzer
(27:39) the old man is played by Mitsuki Kimura, cofounder of blues band Yukadan (憂歌団)
he's singing their best-known song "Cleaning Lady" (おそうじおばちゃん) ( • 憂歌団 おそうじおばちゃん )
also, both naomi and him speak in osakan dialect. the old man especially has a heavy accent (that is hard for transcription software to understand...)
(32:00) yamamoto is played by Masashi Yamamoto, himself a director, and is promoting his film "Limousine Drive" (web.archive.org/web/20010413130756/http://www6.plala.or.jp/layline/top.html)
(41:38) no clue about its veracity but a couple youtube comments claim the audience were UA fans chosen by a lottery

----------------
But with my knees hugged close
until we connect,
holding back what overflows
till I can feel it all.
Restless fingers melt the skin,
and bite as if creaking.
Fluttering wind hides its colors,
and tears begin to blur.
Even in the cold dark night,
if I had wings,
I'd embrace the scorching sun
and fly away.
At the dance of a butterfly seeking flowers,
my eyes tremble.
The song of a bird returning to its nest
strikes my eardrums.
Tangled hair becomes a maze,
waiting for distant fingertips.
A voice cries out from my dry throat,
An eternity that bears the name "you".
