Although the title suggests it, this is actually not a song by Chet Atkins. “I Still Can’t Say Goodbye” was written by Bob Blinn and Jimmy Moore - however, it was Chet Atkins who made it widely known with his classic style of guitar playing in 1987.
I remember it from my childhood, when a “Chet Atkins & Friends” concert was shown on television in the late ’80s. My parents recorded it on VHS, and I’ve watched it countless times. To this day, I still listen to it now and then on Spotify (where it appears under “Chet Atkins – Certified Guitar Player”).
From that concert, my highlights are “Still Can’t Say Goodbye” and “Waltz for the Lonely” — the latter is one I’d really like to learn how to play.
Recording this piece really tested my patience, and I kept making one annoying mistake after another — but in the end, I now have a version I am proud of :)
