After months of practice I've finally gotten a few nyckelharpa skills! That's the funky violin that I play ;) . It's the official national instrument of Sweden, but has a long history in the entirety of Europe, going back to medieval times.
It's similar to a hurdy gurdy, which can be thought of as a violin with automated bowing and fingering, but the nyckelharpa is bowed manually which offers some more expressive capabilities. Mine is a prototype laser-cut nyckelharpa made by Jaap Brand, who also made a similar hurdy gurdy called the Nerdy Gurdy xD . It has 4 main strings and a few extra resonant strings that give the instrument some built-in reverb =) .
I hope to one day graduate to a regular violin, but the nyckelharpa is a great introduction with a distinct character all it's own!
