Why “National Socialism” Was Still Far-Right OOTF

Sounds socialist? It isn’t. In German, Volk simply means “people” or “nation.” Every 20th-century German regime - Imperial, Weimar, Nazi, Communist - used the word to brand projects meant to appeal to ordinary citizens.

What matters isn’t the label. It’s the ideology behind it.

For the Nazis, Volk meant a racially defined Volksgemeinschaft, a community limited to so-called “Aryan” Germans. Jews, leftists, and other groups were excluded, persecuted, or murdered.

Despite populist rhetoric aimed at workers, the Nazi regime was decisively far-right:
• Social Democrats and Communists were banned
• Trade unions were smashed
• Leftists were imprisoned in concentration camps
• Big business profited massively from rearmament

After 1945, East Germany reused “Volks-” labels to signal socialist legitimacy, while West Germany deliberately replaced Volk with Bund to distance itself from both Nazism and communism.

In German politics, Volk is branding.
The record of Nazi policy - not the vocabulary - settles the question.
