Operating aircraft from offshore platforms is a key capability for both operators and navies across the world. It’s also a very hazardous activity, with pilots having to navigate one or more of: highly turbulent air, strong up and down drafts, exhaust plumes, and moving flight decks, among other challenges. Knowing what the safe operating limits are for an aircraft is therefore critical in avoiding accidents.
For military applications, these safe operating limits have traditionally been defined via physical testing, known as flight trials. However, this is an expensive and time-consuming process, and it is also reliant on having the ‘right’ wind conditions for the trials period, which cannot be guaranteed. As a result, modelling and simulation is playing an increasingly important role in helping to define the safe operating limits for aircraft.
This webinar will discuss how modelling and simulation is being used to help define safe limits for aircraft operating from offshore platforms. In particular, it will focus on the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations to model the airflows, and how these modelling results can be used to understand the impact that this has on the aircraft operations.
