Students locate fractions on a number line while also learning to describe the relationship between fractions in which one denominator is the multiple of another (for example, 1/2 and 1/4 ). They learn for example that you can break halves in halves to get fourths, that you can break thirds in half to get sixths, and so on. Students also understand that two fractions are equivalent when they are on the same point on the number line.
Standards:
NY-4.NF.1 Explain why a fraction a/b is equivalent to a fraction (a × n)/(b × n) by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions.
