Queensland – Burrum Heads
Welcome to Burrum Heads, a laid-back estuary town where the Burrum River spills into the northern edge of Hervey Bay, creating a shallow, tidal playground perfect for foiling, winging and flatwater twintip cruising. It’s peaceful, local and wide open — framed by mangroves, sandy foreshores and expansive tidal flats that shift with the day’s rhythm.
The spot works best in SE to E winds, with the trades blowing cross-onshore across the river mouth and estuary. You’ll often find a light wind shadow near the shoreline thanks to low dunes and trees, but just a short ride out and the breeze fills in clean and steady. On a good day, the whole area between the boat ramp, river mouth and the bay opens up with space to stretch out and play.
Tides shape everything here. At low tide the water pulls right back, revealing sticky flats and long walk-outs to reach rideable depth. The best sessions are found around mid to high tide — ideally incoming — when the water smooths over the sandbars and flows gently through the channels, giving you consistent depth and glassy sections to carve through.
When it aligns, Burrum Heads offers a mellow, forgiving session with easy launches, gentle currents and plenty of space to roam. There are no big kickers or reef breaks here — just long tacks, chilled laps and a low-stress setup that makes it ideal for progression and flatwater fun. Bring booties if you're chasing a low-tide mission, keep an eye on the tide clock, and enjoy one of the Fraser Coast’s most user-friendly foiling and cruising spots.
