The elections to the European Parliament will be used by rights and anti-gender movements to attack and fundamentally change the liberal democracies in Europe. The enemy image "gender ideology" forms the symbolic glue between various religious, fundamentalist and political forces. Human rights and the equality of all genders are called into question, social discourses shifted ever further to the right.
Based on recent developments in Hungary by Viktor Orban, Prof. Andrea Petö analyzes in her lecture what is new about these attacks on feminist achievements. It shows that the anti-gender movements are a nationalist, neo-conservative response to the crisis oft the neo-liberal worldorder and that it is important to oppose it.
Andrea Petö, 54, is a professor of gender studies at the Central European University in Budapest and one of the most prominent historians in Hungary. Her work on gender, politics, the Holocaust and war has been translated into 18 languages. She is currently researching at the Institute for Contemporary History of the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich. For the Heinrich Böll Foundation she has issued a feminist assessment of the suppression of the uprising in Hungary in 1956.
