🔍 Waqfs are economic institutions that have played an essential role in Cypriot society, by acting as redistributors of wealth in trade relations , since the Ottoman period. In this webinar, we will explore how new methods in history, such as the use of the Geographic Information System, can help us gain a broader understanding of how the Waqfs interacted with and shaped social and spatial relations.

Abstract:
In this webinar, Sefer Soydar will give a short presentation of the role of Waqfs in Cyprus's social and economic history during mainly the 17th and 18th centuries. Next, the Q&A, facilitated by our discussant Okcan Yıldırımtürk, will discuss the following questions / possibilities: what could a study on this central economic institution on the island tell us about the Cypriot community? Can Cyprus's economic history inform us about the Cypriot community in novel ways beyond the communal differences and their modern nationalist interpretations? In what ways can the spatial history and the use of new methods in history, such as of the Geographic Information System, help us see the history of Cyprus in a new light? To what extent could map (ping) be a tool to analyze the socio-economic relations in Cyprus' history?

📌 Having gained a BA degree at METU, Sefer Soydar completed his MA at Boğaziçi University History Department. Currently, he is a PhD student at the same university. His main areas of interest are environmental history, history of global capitalism, and socio-economic history of Ottoman Empire.
