Sheherazade, composed in 1888 by Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, is a symphonic suite inspired by the tales of One Thousand and One Nights. Seeking to evoke the exoticism and vivid storytelling of the Arabian Nights, Rimsky-Korsakov combined Russian orchestral color with Eastern-influenced melodies. Each of the four movements suggests different stories, though the composer avoided strict programmatic titles, allowing listeners to imagine their own narratives. The solo violin represents the voice of Scheherazade herself, weaving tales to delay her execution. Premiered in Saint Petersburg, the work became one of Rimsky-Korsakov’s most enduring compositions, admired for its brilliant orchestration and evocative themes.
