Marrithiyal designer Paul McCann was raised on his traditional lands, 365km southwest of Darwin. McCann takes inspiration from his grandmother, her 1950s glamour and chic elegance. A flair for the dramatic, seen in McCann's gumnut gown and other similar pieces, are a result of her influence.
McCann became a part of history 2021 as the gown he designed and made, became one of the showstopping pieces at Australian Fashion Week's very first First Nations Runway event.
National Indigenous Fashion Awards showcases the innovative and cultural contributions of First Nations creatives in the fashion industry. Presented by the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair Foundation, this award celebrates First Nations' garments that are worn as expressive pieces of fine art to celebrate diversity and culture.
