Early colonial journals, tax records, and U.S. census documents from the 1700s and early 1800s openly listed people as “Black Indian,” “Indian Negro,” or Afro-Indigenous—with no controversy. Native and African families lived together, shared land, customs, and lineage across the Southeast and Indian Territory.

But by the mid-1800s, those identities began to vanish. Federal policies like the Dawes Act (1887) and Curtis Act (1898) forced Native nations to enroll citizens under rigid racial categories. Afro-Indigenous families were often placed on Freedmen rolls, splitting families and stripping land, citizenship, and recognition.
