Clayton was born of "goodly parents" in Missouri, and his father was a Methodist. When his mother passed away, a wedge was driven between Clayton and his father. Clayton searched for answers in religion and was introduced to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Not only did the Plan of Salvation answer his questions, but it also helped him heal the years of contention between him and his father.
