This subscriber request touches on how to cut a straight line with a blacksmith hot cut chisel. I share some blacksmith tips for this topic, and also demonstrate them as well.
Hot chiseling is necessary in some instanced. For the particular subscriber, he was trying to do hot chiseling on a railroad spike to make a split cross. Using a chisel is a good way of cutting metal. Also a band saw is a fantastic option.
If you don't have a hot cut chisel, going about forging a hot cut chisel of your own isn't too difficult. I have some resources below. I also have a video about hardening and tempering a chisel.
Some of the blacksmith tricks mentioned in this video:
You need to chisel back towards yourself, so that you can have a clear field of view. Put a center punch mark where you are going to end, as a point of reference. Mark out your line before cutting through. Frequently cool of your chisel.
If you want to see more about forging a hot cut chisel, you can check out this video I made previously: • Basic Blacksmithing Tools "The Slit Chisel"
I also have a video on hardening and tempering a chisel: • Hardening and Tempering a Chisel
