Complete 6pm news show from WLNE-TV, the ABC affiliate in New Bedford, Massachusetts, also covering Providence and the state of Rhode Island. This was the weekend edition of the program, following ABC's coverage of the 1997 Belmont Stakes. As always, commercials will be uploaded later.
Now this was a find for the channel, since WLNE from this period is hit-or-miss. Bits and pieces of a 1998 show are on here, and FlamingoPulse's news open compilation has a few opens from the period on it, but here we have late 90s WLNE in full throttle. Makes sense though, because WLNE was the last place station in the Providence market and really hasn't been able to dent powerhouse WJAR and strong second WPRI.
WLNE's look at the time, despite their ratings, was actually really good. It was one of the earliest designs by Hothaus, having been made when they switched to ABC in 1995. Sister station WRGB in Albany, NY later picked this package up in 1998, but added in different colors, a talent bump and a red circle behind the "6." After that point, it's really interesting how Freedom began treating the two stations: WRGB was their favorite station and had lots of resources poured into it, while WLNE began to look more dated once the 2000s hit (and succeeding owners didn't help). However seeing WRGB nowadays, I'd prefer WLNE in a heartbeat.
Jeff Derderian anchors the news, with Mark Searles (now at WJAR) doing weather and sports from Brian O'Neill, plus reports from Kathy Connelley and Chris Perrera. Derderian was later convicted of manslaughter after the 2003 Station nightclub fire (he partially owned it).
News music is a custom theme by Star Trak Music (which also composed a theme for WBRZ in Baton Rouge), and the voiceover is unknown (though Bill Ratner voices a rejoin open; he is heard on many commercials in my upcoming montage). I did cut out the audio during sports scores since an instrumental from "Low Rider" by War played over it.
