It's always a good time to go over some of the basics of comic book collecting and investing. Before you buy any comic book, you should ask yourself, is this a collectible?, an investment? or a speculation? Understanding the differences between the three can help you become a better comic book investor.
In the video I first talk about collecting and speculating -- 2 ways of buying comics that I personally would not recommend. With collecting, you are sure to end up with countless long boxes, storage issues and wasting cash on many non-key issues. Speculating in comics is even tougher -- You have to work at it to stay on top of the trends and it's really easy to get emotional and make bad buys. Moreover, you usually have to buy issues because they are trendy, not because you actually like them and want them.
I would recommend taking an investment approach when buying comic books. Stick to iconic brands and characters (don't follow trends). Buy only key issues, 1st appearances, origins, popular artists and classic covers. For 1980s to modern comics, buy only CGC 9.8 or nice raw copies. For pre-1980s, buy iconic 1st appearances/ key issues in the best shape possible for your budget.
We go into considerable more detail about collecting comics vs investing in comics in the video. Hope you enjoy it and leave us a comment to add to the discussion. Thank you for watching!!
