Gloucester is a city in Gloucestershire in South West England in the United Kingdom (UK). It was founded by the Roman Empire in AD 97 and became an important town during the Middle Ages. It had many monastic buildings including the Gloucester Cathedral, the St Peter's Abbey, which was founded in 679. The Gloucester Cathedral is the major attraction of the town as it is also the burial site of King Edward II. Gloucester is located on the River Severn - between the Cotswolds and the Forest of Dean. Gloucester is close to Birmingham and the border with Wales. The city has a population of 150,000 and a port in the Sharpness Canal to the Severn Estuary.
